ALOTAU PROVINCIAL HOSPITAL MARKS WORLD HEART DAY WITH SCREENING PROGRAM

29 September 2026

Alotau Provincial Hospital (APH) is commemorating World Heart Day with a two-day Non-Communicable Disease
(NCD) screening program under the global theme "Don't Miss a Beat.
The program, led by the APH Internal Medicine Team and the Public Health Disease Control Team, commenced yesterday
and will end today at the AT40 Clinic. The screening targets staff of the Milne Bay Provincial Health Authority (MBPHA)
at the PHA Headquarters and includes blood pressure and hypertension checks, blood sugar, BMI, and general
cardiovascular risk assessment.
The initiative is aligned with the global World Heart Day campaign which focuses on early detection and prevention of
heart disease.
According to APH Physician Dr. Dennis Tony, the program is aimed at strengthening early detection and management of
cardiovascular risk factors, starting with healthcare workers themselves.
"This program is aimed at strengthening early detection and management of cardiovascular risk factors across our
healthcare workers. We believe that this program will make a meaningful contribution to reducing the burden of non
communicable diseases among health workers and ensure staff are well and healthy to provide care to patients and clients,"
Dr. Tony said.
Chief Executive Officer of MBPHA, Dr. Perista Mamadi officially opened the World Heart Day commemoration with two
key messages: to manage your life and manage what you eat.
"Know your health status, especially your heart," Dr. Mamadi said in his closing remarks, while encouraging all to take
care of their own health.
Meanwhile, Disease Control Coordinator and Acting Deputy Director Public Health, Mr. Tony Lota reminded young
people that lifestyle choices have a direct impact on heart health.
Mr. Lota said smoking, continuous intake of fatty foods, excessive consumption of alcohol and lack of physical exercise
can cause heart problems. He encouraged everyone to do regular medical check-ups to ensure their heart is healthy.
"Show love to your heart and your heart will show you back the same love," Mr. Lota expressed.
The World Heart Day screening is part of APH and MBPHA's ongoing efforts to address the rising burden of non
communicable diseases in Milne Bay Province.
